EXTRA SECOND ADDED TO 2008

Those eager to put 2008 behind them will have to hold their good-byes for just a moment this New Year's Eve.

The world's official timekeepers have added a "leap second" to the last day of the year on Wednesday, to help match clocks to the Earth's slowing spin on its axis, which takes place at ever-changing rates affected by tides and other factors.

The U.S. Naval Observatory, keeper of the Pentagon's master clock, said it would add the extra second on Wednesday in coordination with the world's atomic clocks at 23 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds Coordinated Universal Time, or UTC.

That corresponds to 6:59:59 p.m. EST (23:59:59 GMT), when an extra second will tick by -- the 24th to be added to UTC since 1972, when the practice began.

UTC is the time scale kept by highly precise atomic clocks around the world, accurate to about a billionth of a second per day, the Naval Observatory says. For those with a need for precision timing, it has replaced Greenwich Mean Time, or GMT.

The decision to add or remove a second is the responsibility of the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service, based on its monitoring of the Earth's rotation.

VOLVO TO INTRODUCE WORLD'S FIRST "ACCIDENT PROOF CAR" NEXT MONTH

Volvo, a great manufacturer plans to unveil a world's first "ACCIDENT-PROOF" car. The Researchers and developer team have already planned the car for how to avoid the accident. This car having a feature of radar control system which will automatically detect the collision then apply the break automatically and there would always some gap distance between the front car. Their aim for 2020 is no one should killed or injured by Volvo car. This type of technology will improve our standard and brings out many different type of designed car.It works with the help of a radar unit fitted in the car's grille, which not only detects what is in front of the vehicle, but how fast it is moving. When the car believes that there is an imminent threat of a collision, a light flashes on a windscreen display in front of the driver at the same time along with an audible warning, the brakes are applied automatically.

BRITISH PLAYWRIGHT HAROLD PINTER DEAD

Harold Pinter, the Nobel Prize-winning distinguished British playwright , died on Christmas Eve after a prolonged illness, it was announced on Thursday. He was 78 and suffering from liver cancer. He is survived by his second wife Lady Antonia Fraser, a well-known writer in her own right. In a tribute, she said: “He was a great man , and it was a privilege to live with him for over 33 years.”Mr. Pinter, whose plays were famously punctuated with long silences, had the distinction of spawning a distinct genre of playwriting which came to be known as “Pinteresque”. The term became part of the English vocabulary and was included in the Oxford English Dictionary. Mr. Pinter, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2005, remained uncompromisingly left-wing till the end. He was an outspoken critic of British and American foreign policy, especially the invasion of Iraq, and three years ago he announced that he was giving up his writing to concentrate on political work.Author of more than 30 plays—the best-known among them being “The Caretaker” and “The Homecoming” — he also wrote film scripts including that of The French Lieutenant’s Woman.Mr. Pinter was known as a keen observer of “suburban brooding” and credited with bringing realism into contemporary British theatre. The Nobel Prize citation said that in his plays he “uncovers the precipice in everyday prattle and forces entry into oppression’s closed rooms”.“This was a man who had plays with long silences, where characters did not always go anywhere — very much like real life. He brought a realism to the business,” said Tim Walker, a British theatre critic.Born in Hackney, East London in 1930, Mr. Pinter was a passionate advocate of unilateral nuclear disarmament and a bitter critic of U.S. involvement in Central and South America. As a young man, he became a conscientious objector and was fined for refusing to undergo National Service in 1949. Later, he was to turn down knighthood though he accepted a string of other state honours.

Mr. Pinter started off as an actor under the stage name David Baron. His first triumph as a playwright came in 1957 when his play “The Room” was hailed as marking the start of a new era in British theatre. His long career as a playwright, poet and film writer was marked as much by praise as by controversies mostly relating to his political views.

A GREAT EXAMPLE FOR LIFE

A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor.

Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life.

Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups - porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite - telling them to help themselves to hot coffee.

When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said: "If you noticed, all the nice looking expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is but normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress.

What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups and were eyeing each other's cups.

" Now if life is coffee , then the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain
Life, but the quality of Life doesn't change. Some times, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee in it."

So folks, don't let the cups drive you..., enjoy the coffee instead.

MICROSOFT RELEASES EMERGENCY PATCH FOR PC

The Microsoft Corporation is taking the unusual step of issuing an emergency fix for a security hole in its Internet Explorer software that has exposed millions of users to having their computers taken over by hackers.

The “zero-day” vulnerability, which came to light last week, allows hackers to take over victims’ machines simply by steering them to infected websites; users do not have to download anything for their computers to get infected, which makes it all the more dangerous. Internet Explorer is the world’s most widely used web browser.

Microsoft said it planned to ship a security update, rated “critical,” for the browser on Wednesday. People with the Windows Update feature activated on their computers will get the patch automatically.

Thousands of websites have already been compromised by hackers looking to exploit the flaw. Malicious codes have been loaded on to those sites, which automatically infect visitors’ machines if they are using Internet Explorer and have not employed a complicated series of workarounds that Microsoft has suggested. Microsoft said it had seen attacks targeting the flaw only in Internet Explorer 7, but has cautioned that all other current editions of the browser are vulnerable.

MARILYN MONROE'S PHOTOGRAPHS SOLD FOR 97,000 POUNDS

A collection of 36 photographs of the late Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe, which were taken in 1962, was sold at auction house Christie's here for 97,000 pounds.

The images, shot by Bert Stern for American Vogue magazine, are believed to have been the last professional photographs of the star and, following her death later that year, ran in the magazine as a memorial as opposed to the original feature planned, reports vogue.co.uk.

The series purchased by an anonymous bidder is part of over 100 iconic images of Monroe going under the hammer as part of a pre-Christmas photographic sale at the house.

SONY LAUNCHES PLAYSTATION

Sony Corporation much delayed virtual community for owners of its PlayStation 3 game console will start worldwide Thursday, but it's unlikely to attract many newcomers to the machine.

The free-of-charge PlayStation Home service is mainly meant to make gaming more fun for people who already own the PS3. Owners download Home software and connect their PS3 to broadband to create three-dimensional digital images that represent themselves called "avatars," and communicate with the avatars of other PS3 owners.

The figures wander around virtual lawns, bowling alleys, arcades and homes in the PS3, but the central activity is playing games and becoming friends with other PlayStation 3 game fans, according to Sony. Junji "JB" Shoda, a Sony Computer Entertainment Japan vice president, who oversees Home, said Wednesday the service isn't meant to rival virtual worlds like Linden Lab's "Second Life," which can be played on personal computers and has drawn millions of people.

Sony had the idea for Home before such virtual worlds or "metaverse" in cyberspace became popular, he said. "This is a community for gamers," Shoda told reporters at a Sony Computer Entertainment office in Tokyo.

"It's meant to enrich the interactive experience for gamers." The service, offered in eight languages, will start in Japan, Europe, U.S. and other areas where PlayStation 3 is available.

The service will be updated with new games, licensing partners and events including a New Year's countdown ceremony. Home was initially promised for 2007, but was delayed twice.

Shoda said the delays were needed to get feedback and understand what gamers wanted, as well as check on security and other anti-crime features. Ryoji Akagawa, a senior producer at Sony's game unit, said Home will help ensure PS3 owners will keep coming back to play games.

It may also possibly encourage family members to start playing with the PS3 that's in their homes, he said. But both Shoda and Akagawa were cautious about promising significant console sales perks from Home.

The PS3 has struggled against rivals Wii from Nintendo Co. and Microsoft Corporation.

It also plans to cut another 8,000 temporary jobs worldwide. The reductions are in electronics and don't apply to the gaming business.

SCIENTISTS INVOLVED IN CREATING ARTIFICAL LIFE

Scientists have discovered a more efficient way of building a synthetic genome that could one day enable them to create artificial life, according to a study.

The method is already being used to help develop next generation biofuels and biochemicals in the labs of controversial celebrity US scientist craig ventor.

Venter has hailed artificial life forms as a potential remedy to illness and global warming, but the prospect is highly controversial and arouses heated debate over its potential ramifications and the ethics of engineering artificial life.

Artificially engineered life is one of the Holy Grails of science, but also stirs deep fears as foreseen in Aldous Huxley's 1932 novel "Brave New World" in which natural human reproduction is eschewed in favor of babies grown in laboratories.

The J. Craig Venter Institute succeeded in synthetically reproducing the DNA of a simple bacteria last year.

The researchers had initially used the bacteria e. coli to build the genome, but found it was a tedious, multi-stage process and that e. coli had difficulty reproducing large DNA segments.

They eventually tried using a type of yeast called saccharomyces cerevisiae. This enabled them to finish creating the synthetic genome using a method called homologous recombination, a process that cells naturally use to repair damage to their chromosomes.

They then began to explore the capacity for DNA assembly in yeast, which turned out to be a "genetic factory," the Institute said in a statement Wednesday.

The researchers inserted relatively short segments of DNA fragments into yeast cells through homologous recombination method.

They found they were able to build the entire genome in one step, according to the study set to be published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"We continue to be amazed by the capacity of yeast to simultaneously take up so many DNA pieces and assemble them into genome-size molecules," said lead author Daniel Gibson.

"This capacity begs to be further explored and extended and will help accelerate progress in applications of synthetic genomics."

Senior author Clyde Hutchison added, "I am astounded by our team's progress in assembling large DNA molecules. It remains to be seen how far we can push this yeast assembly platform but the team is hard at work exploring these methods as we work to boot up the synthetic chromosome."

Venter and his team continue to work towards creating a living bacterial cell using the synthetic genome sequence of the Mycoplasma genitalium bacteria.

The bacteria, which causes certain sexually transmitted diseases, has one of the least complex DNA structures of any life form, composed of just 580 genes.

In contrast, the human genome has some 30,000.

Using the genetic sequence of this bacteria, the Maryland-based team has created a chromosome known as Mycoplasma laboratorium.

They are working on developing a way to transplant this chromosome into a living cell and stimulate it to take control and effectively become a new life form.
